#213 Jerry Simon wins 2007 IRIYA Championship Regatta.
February 12, 2007
Regatta Wrap-Up
Besides the exciting racing, this year's 2007 IRIYA Championship Regatta provided an excellent opportunity for the ice yacht clubs of Ohio, Wisconsin and Michigan to renew old ties. It was also a great showcase for the Renegade and should help to create more interest in the class.
Many "old-timers" who used to sail Renegades as far back as the 1940s stopped by to visit with Jerry Simon and talk about the good old days.
Members of the TIYC deserve a huge thanks for their race committee help and awesome hospitality. They really helped to make the regatta very special. Thanks to TIYC Commodore Jason Hall who was always standing by ready to help, Randy Baumker, Tim Branson, Al Johnson, Dick Faunce, Jim Davis, Karen & Bob Snyder for letting us eat, drink, and warm up at their house; and Bob & Ann Foeller.
All out of town skippers agree that they would travel to Maumee Bay again for a regatta.
Day 3 Report
We came to the ice on Sunday to find heavier air blowing in the 12 to 15 mph range. A perfect way to end the regatta because it provided a variety of conditions for everyone, especially Don Anderson whose domination of the last race catapulted him into third place in overall standings.
As they lined up for the first race, Greg Simon held a one point lead over his father, Jerry. As the old saying "ice boats go faster just before they break" goes, one of Greg's blocks came loose during the race, smacking him between the eyes (no injury, he's okay).
The equipment failure led to a 5th place finish in the race for Greg and a regatta win for Jerry, who last won the regatta back in 1976!

Trophy Presentation
Arlyn LaFortune had car trouble on the way to Toledo and was unable to serve as the regatta's Chief Judge. Bob Foeller, who has served on several DN World's RCs, stepped in to serve as Chief Judge. Don Williams sailed Bob's Renegade in the regatta.
Here's Dick Faunce who waved the flag and called out the numbers for me to score. These TIYC club members really stepped up for this regatta.
Randy Baumker helped to set up marks and do anything that needed to be done.

Day 2 Report
Today was Maumee Bay's Fun Day On the Ice for the community. The Renegade regatta along with the other ice boats attracted quite a bit of attention. I counted about 80 masts up and down the bay this afternoon while enjoying the hospitality from a TIYC club member who provided a lunch of burgers, hotdogs, and her special home made apple pie. The fleet was able to complete three races today. The wind was medium and the ice was hard with some drifts. Jerry Simon won the first two races while Greg Simon took the third. Competition in the rest of the field remains close. I wish I could post today's photos but I forgot the necessary cord that downloads photos to my laptop. The atmosphere at the shore was very festive and local club members were happy to be back on the ice after experiencing a few seasons with no conditions.

Day 1 Report
The first race was abandoned due to lack of wind but the wind came up in the afternoon and the Renegades were able to sail two races. Greg Simon won both. Jerry Simon took a second and third, while local favorite Les Lashaway also took a third and second and is tied with Jerry Simon for second place. The ice is very hard and there is some snow cover with drifting. Sailors are always trying to avoid the drifts and look for clear lanes. Toledo Ice Yacht Club members provided a great cook out for lunch. Got my first ride in a 15 meter, stern-steerer, Arctic II on my way back into the pits. Many thanks to Mary Jane Schalk for providing off-the-ice scoring support.
Day 1: Early AM
The local news station says it's 11 degrees out there and we should see highs of around 20. Winds are forecasted to reach between 8-15 mph. The Madison contingent enjoyed a nice dinner with Don Williams. Don is racing a borrowed Renegade in the regatta.. Off to breakfast and registration...

Thursday Driving & Set Up
Ron Rosten, Greg Whitehorse, and I made it to Toledo today rather uneventfully, that is until we noticed one of the trailer wheels was about to fall off as we backed to unload the boats. Thankfully, the trailer is dropped off at a nearby garage and is receiving two new bearings. The Simons along with Ken Norton are set up on the ice. Don Anderson and Doug Kolner will set up their boats tomorrow morning. Glen Betzoldt and Don Williams greeted us at the landing and there was a crowd of TIYC club members ready to lend a hand unloading and carrying boats to the ice. There were a few DNs and an Arrow sailing today. The wind was brisk. Course will be about a mile from the pits. Off to dinner....
