2008 Renegade Championship Regatta Geneva Lake, Wis. March 7-9.

Three races were sail on Friday in a variety of wind conditions. The first race was 12-15mph from the north. The wind held for the second race, but the angles were changing dramatically. The third race the wind velocity settled down, but the wind shifted back and forth about 60 degree between the two points "protecting" the mark placed in Williams Bay.
Saturday’s wind looked promising 7-10 mph from the northeast. The wind never really settled in, but the race committee did a great job of chasing the ever changing conditions and we were able to complete a race.
Sunday brought light winds straight from the east. Black’s Point and the huge mansions did a great job protecting the windward mark. Sailors were seen over standing the mark on port while rounding"hot" and looking to escape back out in the lake for better wind. The east breeze soon vanished and a flurry of lake effect snow greeted us as we tore down the boats and awarded the trophies.
Mike Derusha #188 won the first race in dominating fashion. Although the light air isn’t exactly his cup of tea, he did an outstanding job with a 2nd place overall finish.
Greg McCormick continued his march to the top of the Renegade fleet. He led several races and finished third overall. Renegade #310 was built by his father at the family lumberyard.
Doug Kolner #515 placed fourth overall with the consistency of his finishes. Doug pulled more pins and made more adjustments than the rest of the fleet combined. With all that new tuning knowledge, look out for "Cold Fusion" at the next regatta.
Glen Betzoldt #499 finished in fifth place overall, but won the coveted trophy for the best skipper over the age of 60. Glen enlisted help carrying the four foot high trophy to his truck. See pictures pictures below of this truly impressive trophy.
Who said old guys can’t push! Near the finish of race #4 on Saturday the wind shut off. The over 60 crowd of Archie Call, Jerry Simon, and Glen Betzoldt just happened to appear two hundred yards short of the finish line. Knowing that THE trophy was at stake, the old geezers all jumped out of their boats and started to push. The short legged Simon jumped off to the sprinters start for the early lead. Archie took longer to get up to speed, but with his longer legs he still had a shot. Glen was close behind and counting on his younger age 60) to wear them down. Archie used his long stride and superior form to win the battle by less than a boat length. The race will go down in Renegade history as the Heart Attack Special. The race committee was standing by with oxygen and a defibrillator as each skipper was seen helmet off laying on the runner plank gasping for air!
Renegade Commodore Don Anderson #420 sailed Easy Rider to a sixth place finish in this years IRIYA. Only one point separated him from moving up two positions. Don was seen leaving the ice on Friday with his runner plank on the top of his car. Saturday morning the plank came back a little more flexible and a little less black.
Ken Norton sailing #462 led for two laps of race #4. He finished the race second. During the first beat to windward, Ken was seen hiking up the course while the rest of the fleet was parked.

Greg Whitehorse #500 sailing"Blade Runner" lent his knowledge and wisdom at the annual meeting. Word on the ice is that Greg has acquired one of the coveted 85 Boston sails. Look out for the Blade Runner in 09.
Jim Lafortune #210 sailing Air Conditioned presided over the annual meeting at the Lake Geneva Yacht Club. After discussing issues such as batten changes, race format, and race length, everything was voted down. I guess the Renegade again has proven it’s perfect and no changes are needed.
Jerry Simon #113 sailing Simonized IV and defending his 2007 regatta victory lead early during the final race. It was noted by fellow competitors the #113 was seen gassing #213 upwind several times. #113 also jammed his boat in tight at a leeward mark rounding forcing #213 wide. Jerry was heard saying "needed to teach that kid a lesson".
For the first time in a few years, Mike Disbrow made an appearance in the historic Millenbach Renegade III. It’s always great to see Mike and Harley Disbrow.
Other highlights of the regatta include Buddy Melges finding the shell ice with his Skeeter. Buddy was so gracious on Friday morning personally telling each sailor to say away from the orange cone near the Yacht Club. He said "six to eight inches of shell ice that could swallow a boat". Apparently while sailing past the Yacht Club looking for his wife Gloria, he noticed that dreaded orange cone too late. See photos here.
Thanks again to all of the competitors and the Lake Geneva Ice Yacht Club for hosting the event. Deb Whitehorse and Mary Jane have become fixtures at our regattas and do an exceptional job scoring.
And finally Steve Schalk, Burly Brellenthin, Sparky Lundberg, and the race committee deserve special recognition. I hate to think where we would have been without all the hard work they put in.

It's Simon (Again)!

Greg Simon 1st, and Glen Betzoldt with the Masters Trophy for best placing skipper aged 60 and over. Glen became eligible for the regatta this year.
Greg Simon won the 2008 Renegade Championship Regatta that was sailed on Geneva Lake, March 7-9, 2008. Mike Derusha was second and Greg McCormick was third. Results are posted here.

Final Confirmation: IRIYA Regatta Called On
The IRIYA has been called on for March 7,8,9, 2008 for Geneva Lake in Fontana, Wisconsin. We will be sailing with the ISA. Here's the website for lodging information, maps, photos, and reports.

I’d like to congratulate fellow Four Lakes skipper Greg Simon for capturing his first NIYA Renegade title this past weekend at Geneva Lake, Wisconsin. Greg sailed a magnificent regatta and won 2 of the 4 races in some very challenging conditions. George Gerhardt from the South Side Ice Yacht Club in Oshkosh, WI continues to raise eyebrows by placing a strong second. Finishing a rock solid third was Mike Derusha from Menominee Michigan. Well done gentleman.

New IRIYA Agenda Item
6.8 From Robert Pagel: Article XIII - Races, Section 13.4
Add:
"The length of each race shall be a minimum of 8 miles. It is preferable for a race course to be one mile between the windward and leeward marks and for each race to be 4 laps. The distance between marks may vary provided the length of the race is 8 miles or greater."

The Original Renegade II Turns Up In Barn!
Via Renegade Association Secretary Ron Rosten: "These photos were sent to me from Gord Devries of Trenton Ontario, who recently picked up an old iceboat just sitting in someone’s barn. The old boat that Gord picked up turned out to be Renegade II built by Elmer Millenbach in 1941. The previous owner used it to make a plug for fiberglass hulls. Gord is currently restoring the boat and will be sailing one of those fiberglass Renegades until the wooden boat is complete. Can you see where Elmer signed and dated the mast reinforcing between bulkheads number 7 and 8? Elmer won the ISA with this boat in 1948, and keep in mind he was competing against both the Skeeters and Renegades.
