1958: GULL LAKE, MICHIGAN
Here's some wonderful historic video shot at the 1958 NIYA regatta sailed on Gull Lake in Michigan. This comes by way of Shirley Cross Fortune, daughter of Detroit Ice Yacht Club's Wally Cross. Shirley remembers that at the end of every regatta her dad always donned the cowboy hat and passed around the Cutty Sark.
Discovered some interesting history while researching this regatta. Chris Smith, of Chris Craft fame, was sailing a Skeeter and had an equipment failure that led to an incident with my father, 4LIYC Skeeter sailor Dave Rosten. SIBC DNer Jane Pegel remembers the technical details, "I believe it had something to do with his mainsheet being pinched by the ratchet block. As he threw the sheet, the rope got pinched between the deck and the ratchet and the sail would not ease out. Subsequently Clyde Sharpnack redesigned the ratchet blocks so there was a guide integral with the side cheeks of the block and the rope was guided out of the block and could not get pinched. Sailors with old ratchet blocks remodeled the blocks to incorporate the guide feature." Jane also typed up some newspaper articles that she had in her archives from this regatta. Click here to read.
SIBC DNer Jane Pegel attended that regatta and has helpfully identified the following people:
