Conclusion
Game faces before the third and deciding race,
Mike Derusha R188, left and George Gerhardt R123
Congratulations to George Gerhardt R123 for his first ever title as Renegade Champion. Congratulations to everyone who made the trip to Puckaway Lake.
Sorry for the late report but there was limited internet access at the sailing site and hotel.
Saturday became a lay day because there was not a breath of wind. Of course we made the best of it and enjoyed lunch with members of the Green Lake Ice Yacht Club. Joe Norton almost had us convinced that Dan Bierman sailed his iceboat uphill both ways to school when he was a kid. The banquet at the Mecan Outfitters Lodge was wonderful. The setting was like a Montana ski resort.
Renegaders woke up to wind of 7 - 10 mph on Sunday morning and wasted no time getting to the lake. Peter Fauerbach dropped the flag at 9:12 AM. George Gerhardt won the first race with Mike Derusha R188 second. They switched finish positions for the second race. This regatta's bylaws call for only three races on Sunday so the next race was crucial for both George and Mike.
Michigan's Glenn Betzoldt R499 held a solid lead during all four laps of the final race. George was able to consistently round in second on each lap while Mike Derusha, Dan Beirman R520, and Greg McCormick R310 battled back and forth for third. It was an exciting race to watch knowing what was on the line.
Thanks to the Green Lake Ice Yacht Club for hosting, Jim Walker for bringing his ATV and sitting at the weather mark with the lights on, Peter Fauerbach for being an on the spot Chief Judge, John Hayashi for his assistance, and finally Steve and Mary Jane Schalk for their on shore scoring team support. They were able to tabulate and finish before the Packer game began. There should be more photos and video posted later.

It's a balmy five degrees here this morning at iceboat.org, a higher temperature than was forecasted. But the wind forecast is right on so far there doesn't seem to be any wind right now.
The banquet was well attended by both DNs and Renegade sailors and it was good to catch up with our ice boating friends from Minnesota, Illinois, and Michigan.

IRIYA Championships Day Two
Racing began at 2 PM today and three races were sailed. In the first race there was an incident between regatta leader Mike Derusha and Don Anderson. Mike's springboard was damaged and he was forced to drop out of the race. Both skippers were okay and Don Anderson went on to win the first race of the day. (As I left the lake, both skippers were shaking hands with each other.)
Equipment failures plagued Doug Kolner and Andy McCormick today.
Tim McCormick won the other two races. Drifting increased today but there was more black ice showing than on Friday. Winds were out of the NNW 12-15 mph.
Saw a big fleet of DNs racing on the western end of the lake. The Renegade skippers are joining the DNs tonight at their banquet.

A great day for Renegade racing today with 15 mph winds and a little bit of snow. Greg Simon's mast "exploded" during the second race but he'll be back on Saturday.

The Original Renegade II Turns Up In Barn!
Via Renegade Association Secretary Ron Rosten: "These photos were sent to me from Gord Devries of Trenton Ontario, who recently picked up an old iceboat just sitting in someone’s barn. The old boat that Gord picked up turned out to be Renegade II built by Elmer Millenbach in 1941. The previous owner used it to make a plug for fiberglass hulls. Gord is currently restoring the boat and will be sailing one of those fiberglass Renegades until the wooden boat is complete. Can you see where Elmer signed and dated the mast reinforcing between bulkheads number 7 and 8? Elmer won the ISA with this boat in 1948, and keep in mind he was competing against both the Skeeters and Renegades.
