ISA & Renegade Championship Day 3: Snow Falling On Skeeters

What was forecasted to be a dusting turned into 3" of fluffy white snow here in Battle Lake and the race committee has called the regatta complete. Awards ceremony will be held at the launch.

ISA & Renegade Championship: Day 2

UPDATE PM Report:
Standings posted on the ISA page.
Good day of racing until visibility was limited by snow, rain, and fog.
Racing beings at 9:30AM today on the west end of Battle Lake. Local residents have been very welcoming to the ice sailors. The best place to watch will be from the Shoreline or surrounding area. The goal is to have 5 rotations in per fleet and the A Skeeters start first. Two A Class Skeeters have had to drop out. Paul Krueger's boat suffered some damage while it was on the trailer as he drove on the launch Jordon Glaser's Skeeter had a front runner blow off. The building wind added to the excitement of taking the mast down so that the boat could be safely hauled back into shore.

ISA & Renegade Championship: Day 1

PM UPDATE:
As predicted, sustained 20 mph winds arrived and the first day of racing was postponed until tomorrow. Nite sailor, John Hayashi, put it best with this photo: "What a great day to fix the thingamabobber or the merkel jam."

Off to the annual meetings of the ISA and Renegade Association. Tomorrow's wind forecast of 8-10mph out of the southwest will make it a busy day with lots of racing.
AM UPDATE: We had a very easy drive to the regatta site (except for close to the lake when I tried a few shortcuts which resulted in really getting to know the dirt roads around Battle Lake). It was surprising to see the east coast contingent, Mark Hancik, Keith Kennedy, and Bill Bucholz, had won the race to Battle Lake; they were already set up and sailing! Longest distance traveled award goes to Bill Bucholz of Maine and it's a pleasure to finally get to meet him after all these years of email correspondence. Bill drove seven hours to New Jersey to catch the 24 hour a ride out here with Mark and Keith.
The town is very welcoming and the group is already regulars at the Shoreline, the combination bar, cafe, restaurant, and bowling alley next to the hotel. The wind is forecasted to be "blowing dogs off the chain" today so there's a chance of postponement. But, this is iceboating, and anything can happen! Will head down to the launch site soon for registration. Mary Jane Schalk is handling the shore office duties this weekend so she will have results to me very quickly. I'm most likely going to be on an ATV which means any photos or video during the day will be posted on my Facebook page.

ISA & Renegade Championship Called ON

The ISA and Renegade Championships have been called ON for Battle Lake, Minnesota February 24-26, 2017. Don Sanford puts it best in this email: "Even though it currently appears that we will be unable to sail on Friday due to high winds, the regatta officially begins on Friday. Races may or may not be held. A decision to go into postponement will be made Friday morning. Forecast for the Sat & Sun looks very good.
Please note there is a potential for blizzard conditions along the route on Friday traveling “from the south” on Friday. The prudent iceboater will travel on Thursday to avoid the bad weather. However, even if you are unable to travel on Thursday, take a chance that we are not sailing on Friday and come up to play for Saturday and Sunday. Ice conditions are very good on Battle Lake. There’s room for a 1 mile course no matter the wind direction."
Launch:
UPDATE: The launch has been changed to the EAST end of Battle Lake. You will be able to drive your trailers on there.

Twin Spin Thursday:1941 & 2016 ISA Regattas: Dogs & Cats Edition

2016 International Skeeter Association regatta winner, Steve Orlebeke, posted a great photo of his puppy, Mac, posing with the regatta trophy on his Facebook page today. This gave me the idea to post a related photo from the 1941 ISA and to kick off a new version of Throw Back Thursday with a twist. A related contemporary photo will be included with the vintage photo as a reminder that a new season is just weeks away.

1957 ISA News & Views: December

"Your sail came down because the mast exploded!"
The December 1957 ISA News & Views covers a variety of topics including a discussion of the complications of ice boat racing rules in the years before the National Iceboat Authority was established. There were rules of the Northwest, the ISA, the DN60 fleet, and the North American Yacht Racing Union.
Ice Yacht Challenge Pennant: There are some historic photos from the 1952 Ice Yacht Challenge Pennant which was the second time it was sailed in the west after Ed Rollberg went out east and won it in 1952.
4LIYC News: "Our old member but new Skeeter skipper, Paul Krueger (17) has built himself a new Skeeter with a 23' rig." Read it all here.

New C Skeeter Build in MN

This is MN based Pat Heppert’s new C Skeeter. It’s an attempt at a lower cost, front cockpit Skeeter that is easy to transport in its small lightweight enclosed trailer, and easy to set up by one person. Will it be fast? Will it be the slowest anchor-like contraption in existence? Will the C Skeeter fleet start to build? Or will it remain the under-represented Skeeter class? More construction pictures are on the Minnesota web site under the "How To" section, www.iceboating.net. Pat says that full size CAD drawn frame patterns are available."

1957 News & Views: April

Here's the April edition of the 1957 ISA News & Views, edited by Jane Pegel. Topics include an ISA regatta report, organization of a committee on boat development, Ice Yacht Challenge Pennant report, more opinions on boat development, reports to Jane from the clubs, and a Bargain Counter, where you'l find the "cheapest advertising in the world for the world's greatest cheapSKATES". I have no photos from the 1957 ISA but have posted some Skeeter pictures taken by Carl Bernard from around that time.

1957 ISA News & Views

We've started a project to scan all the International Skeeter Association News and Views. Here's a the November 1957 issue which was edited by Jane Pegel. Interesting to note that discussions about Skeeter development from 57 years ago haven't changed all that much. Read it here.

"Gale puts thrills in Northwestern ice regatta"

Fancy Machines

A 30 mile gale added thrills to the Northwestern Ice Yachting Association regatta on Lake Mendota at Madison, Wisc. January 30, 1938. Here two machines are "hiking", which is like "heeling" in a sailboat as H.V. Fitzcharles of Chicago, left, sailing High Voltage, and Harry Melges of Williams Bay, Wisc. at the helm of Fancy Flight put up a heated fight to head each other."
I came across this photo on ebay from a company that specializes in original press photos and snapped it up. NIYA records show Harry Nye as the winner of the 1938 Northwest Skeeter class. Skeeters first competed in the NIYA in 1936. Skeeters didn't have springboards at that time which must have made for quite an exciting ride in a 30 mph gale.

CHANGE PROPOSALS REQUESTED AT THE 2014 ANNUAL ISA MEETING
Take a look on the ISA page for a list of proposals that were requested at the 2014 ISA annual meeting. The list is for discussion and these will need to be an agenda item submitted by an ISA member for the 2015 meeting. December 1st is the deadline for proposal submissions.

Download in a pdf file
FROM DAN CLAPP
Prepared as requested by Steve Schalk 4/27/2014
It was requested in discussion at the 2014 annual meeting at Riley’s Pub on Green Lake, Wisconsin that several options be created for changes to the ISA rules.

SCORING
The first subject was scoring – Should DNF and DNC and DSQ be scored the same as they currently are?

The current scoring method for all three is the number of boats registered in any class plus one. This provides the same score for not finishing an individual race as if you had not come to the start line. There is also no penalty beyond that score for a disqualification.

Proposals for each score code: THESE ARE FOR PROMOTION OF DISCUSSION – AN AGENDA ITEM WILL NEED TO BE PUT FORWARD BY A CLUB TO GET THE MOST POPULAR OPTIONS ON THE 2015 AGENDA.

DNF = Did not finish – started the race but did not complete course at all or within time limit of ½ hour after the first boat to finish.

Option 1: Score DNF as the number of boats that started the race plus one.
Option 2: Score DNF as the number of boats that finished the race plus one.
Option 3: Leave as is.

DNC = Did not Compete – did not come to starting area or start the race.

Option 1: The number registered without the plus one.
Option 2: Leave as is.

DSQ and RAF = Disqualified and Retired after Finishing
Option 1: The number registered plus two.
Option 2: Leave as is.

ASSISTED STARTING
The second subject was the use of pushers for those old enough to need them and how the rule is currently addressed. It was pointed out that standing on the plank while being pushed might be a bit impractical for front seating Skeeter skippers who need a push.
The current rule is: 9.3 - When permitted by race committee, a skipper getting a push at starting line only must be standing on plank while being pushed.

Option 1: When permitted by the race committee, a skipper getting a push at the starting line must be standing in the cockpit when the start signal is given.
Option 2: When permitted by the race committee, a skipper getting a push at the starting line may be seated in the cockpit when the starting signal is given.
Option 3: When permitted by the race committee, a skipper getting a hold or a push at the starting line must be standing in the cockpit when the start signal is given. Option 4: When permitted by the race committee, a skipper getting a hold or a push at the starting line may be seated in the cockpit when the starting signal is given.

NOTE: I left out the option to stand next to the cockpit, because if you could run as fast, or faster than your pusher so you could jump in on the run, you would not need one.
NOTE THAT THE CURRENT RULES ALLOW THE RACE COMMITTEE TO GRANT THE USE OF A PUSHER FOR ANY COMPETITOR WITH A LEGITIMATE NEED WITHOUT REGARD TO AGE. ALSO NOTE THAT CURRENTLY ONLY PUSHING AND NOT HOLDING THE BOAT BACK IS ALLOWED.

AGAIN – THIS IS FOR DISCUSSION AND WILL NEED AN AGENDA ITEM BROUGHT BY A CLUB FOR 2015. AGENDA ITEMS MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE SECRETARY/TREASURER OF THE ISA BY DECEMBER 1, 2014.

Sail Racing ISA Pictures

As we prepare for the ISA regatta called on for Lake Champlain this coming weekend, it's a great time to share these photos from Sweden's Sail Racing. Their photographer, Jan Söderström shot thousands of photos at the 2013 ISA regatta sailed on Lake Kegonsa for an ad campaign that was to have been released in the fall of 2013. But due to a very warm autumn and winter in Europe, Sail Racing has decided to wait with the Skeeter story until next season, autumn 2014. They also filmed quite a bit of video which will be released next season as well.

Eastern ISA Day 1

Yankees on the line today at the Eastern ISA on Lake Champlain in Plattsburgh, New York. Day one standings posted here. Via Skeeter skipper Jordan Glaser, "Three races were run for A, B, & C Skeeter classes today. The day started out with little wind and ultimately blew nice & hard as the day progressed. There was plenty of hard, smooth snow ice...so after enjoying Brooklyn Bagels for breakfast, the DN boys set up there own course and ran the Eastern DNs. Of course, Dan Clapp was in top form and ran away with the A skeeter races today. Chris Davison, Tony Bosco & Jordan Glaser enjoyed duking it out for the other positions. Mark Hancik finally emerged in 1st after today's B skeeter Yankee races. Boy wonder James Lamb (from the New England Ice Yacht Club) took all the C Skeeter races. I'd like to see him match up against Gus Stauber (Rush) from Michigan. Attendees were from Indiana, Sodus Bay, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Red Bank, Lake Hopatkong, Greenpoint & Lake Ronkonkoma. Jeff Smith took a bunch of pics with his new drone (Watch out Craig Wilson!). We'll get Jeff to send you some."

Art Siebke, NJ Skeeter Sailor

We received an inquiry from the nephew of Greenwood Lake, New Jersey Skeeter sailor Art Siebke wanting to learn more about his uncle's involvement in ice boating.

Above is part of a beautifully illustrated advertisement for Camel cigarettes featuring Siebke. Be sure to click on the image to see the entire panel.

Sailing as a member of the Skeeter Ice Boat Club, Siebke won the International Skeeter Association championship in 1948.

The ISA continues to award the Siebke Memorial Trophy to the skipper who travels the farthest to race his yacht in the annual regatta.

If you have any stories to share about Art Siebke, email to me and I'll pass them on to his nephew.
